Design has sadly become a commodity
Active in visual and digital communications since 2010, Studio Blackthorns has seen countless trends in all spheres of graphic design, from web design, graphic design and product design to photography and video. Back then, it was easier to stand out on the Internet, as everything had yet to be created.
Then, over the years, we have seen the emergence of all sorts of graphic resources to simplify this creative work: from mockups for our presentations portfolio templates for our PowerPoint presentations, and free images on Unsplash or even WordPress or Shopify themes under €50 on many marketplaces. In short, over the course of a decade, we've seen that design has simply become a commodity, and that it's now difficult for many agencies and freelancers to make a living from it. On top of this, it's also becoming difficult to charge our customers a high price for our graphic creations. Is it essential for new generations to benefit from these technologies in order to cope with a hectic life and an overly complex world?
Today, other technologies are being added to the mix and are tending to make our jobs increasingly secondary: the generative design, the art code and the’artificial intelligence. Just as machines are gradually replacing supermarket checkout hosts and hostesses, will computers soon replace designers, copywriters and marketers? All will beverage packaging become NFT?s created BY computers FOR computers?
Can we create a beverage project entirely with AI?
We don't have the answer, but it's these profound questions that Studio Blackthorns set out to answer with a concept project called «Alt Planets», realized at 80% using the artificial intelligence available online today. It may have seemed a complex challenge, but in the end it turned out to be much simpler than expected (much to our surprise)!
The idea was to create a soft drinks brand in cans. To do this, we used just 2 websites: hypnogram.xyz for the illustrations and rytr.me for text and concept description. You'll find the full results below.
For the record, we only put 20% of our labor into this creative process (including choice of typography, very light rewriting of generated texts and 3D rendering).

The illustrations in the circles below were created using the Artstation style from the Hypnogram.xyz website. We just applied a light «oil paint» filter on Photoshop and then added a little grain to the whole to give a less digitized character.
