Studio Blackthorns creates and rebrands the next generation of brands: kombucha, functional sodas, premium soft drinks, juices, nolow beverages, and non-alcoholic alternatives. Our most dynamic segment, from Lökki Kombucha à Spark!, with one obsession: in-store impact rather than Instagram aesthetics.

Alcohol-free and next-generation soft drinks are enjoying their golden age: nolow is becoming ingrained in daily habits, functional sodas (prebiotics, adaptogens, CBD) are moving from organic shops into supermarkets, kombucha has found a home on the refrigerated shelves (and not just in organic grocery stores), and an entire generation is building its consumption rituals around non-alcoholic options. The result: dozens of new product launches every year, often driven by the same aesthetic (pastel colors, sans-serif fonts, wellness promises), which end up canceling each other out on store shelves.
In this category more than elsewhere, our conviction makes the difference: tastes and colors certainly differ. But the impact on the shelf is measurable. A soft drink brand wins when it's identified in one second on a saturated shelf, understood in three (what is it, what does it do for me), and found again the following week. The rest, unfortunately, is just decoration.
Emerging soft drink brands face a specific challenge that we tackle every day: finding a positioning that goes beyond the generic promise of «healthy and natural » (the entire aisle already makes that claim), developing a can or bottle design system that can accommodate flavor extensions without losing its identity, breaking into the supermarket sector (product line reviews, buyers, curbside pickup: our guide to supermarket launches details what your packaging will need to demonstrate), and navigating category-specific regulations: nutritional labeling, health claims strictly regulated at the European level (a poorly worded «detox» or «immune boost» claim can block a product’s launch), Nutri-Score, and recycling symbols.
We bring a unique perspective that few agencies possess: an understanding of the language of alcohol. This is invaluable for nolow, where the challenge lies in borrowing the appeal of adult-oriented trends (beer, spritz, gin) without the outdated labeling—and without ending up as a lackluster copy of the original product.

Every project begins with the’Brand Exorcism : What real consumer pain point are you solving? What kind of consumer experience do you offer? What sets you apart from the fifteen pastel-colored brands on the shelf? The design is then validated through our five impact tests, detailed in our reference article on the packaging that sells, with particular attention to the thumb test: next-gen apps are selling massively through drive-through and quick commerce, where your can measures 2 centimeters on screen.
Our acknowledged specialty in this category: can design and brand identities that speak to Generation Z, documented to the point of obsession during the 366 Cans Challenge (366 designs in one year, published by The Dieline and Packaging Digest).

Among our notable projects on this site: Lökki Kombucha, whose repositioning of a leading organic kombucha brand has become a case study documented on our blog; ; Spark!, naming, branding, and cans for a prebiotic soda; ; Gradients, the slow soda, conceived as the anti-energy drink; or else Ikigai Happoshu, a Japanese beer offered with and without alcohol. We also put our paw on Brighton Soda (craft soda), Frida Kombucha, and signed dozens of soft drink, coffee, tea, and functional concepts as part of the 366 Cans Challenge.

Comprehensive brand creation (positioning, naming, brand identity, can or bottle design, multi-flavor design system, production files) starting at €15,000. Repositioning and product line architecture between €25,000 and €50,000. For young brands in the seed stage, our strategic coaching packages help secure positioning before investing in execution: this is often the best way to spend your first euro. A full project takes 3 to 6 months; therefore, plan your supermarket product line review 6 to 12 months in advance.
Launching a kombucha, a functional soda, a line of nolow spirits and beer, or repositioning a brand that has plateaued in the organic market and is targeting supermarkets: Tell us about your project, and we’ll get back to you within 48 hours with an honest assessment of your product category and what truly sets you apart. → Let's talk!
Two blog posts delve into these topics in more detail. Our Complete guide to creating a kombucha brand discusses the positioning and design of the can, and our Nolow Branding Guide explain how to build a non-alcoholic beer or spirit that owns its identity rather than copying its alcoholic big brother.
